I’m obsessed with UK cover art.

Just what I needed…more books I want to buy. But they are SO PRETTY. I’ve seen the UK covers for the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas and I adore them but have never really looked at what other covers are out there. I stopped myself before I could fall too deeply down the rabbit hole but thought I’d share some of my findings with you.

This Maggie Stiefvater Wolves of Mercy Falls series box set is glorious. I desperately MUST HAVE IT now. Seriously, I’m not sure I can survive without it.

Just compare the US (which is beautiful too) to the UK versions. I think individually I might like the US one better but that box set? A must have for me.

and then the new US cover…I’m not overly fond of these

And this Forest of Hands & Teeth by Carrie Ryan? It’s pretty but I do like the creepy US covers..

The US covers:

And the book that got me started on my UK cover journey was Mistborn: The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson

I need these books. They have them in a box set which I’ve ordered

I recently won the UK versions of Page Morgan’s The Beautiful and the Cursed and The Lovely and the Lost. Both are beautiful and I’m so excited to include them with my US versions. The top are the US covers and the bottom are the UK. I can’t find the UK cover for The Wondrous and the Wicked.

What do you think–Which covers do you tend to prefer or are you like me and want every version of your favorite books?

It depends, I agree with you with the Maggie Stiefvater series, the UK boxed set is waaaay prettier! But for the Page Morgan books I prefer the US series!
As far as the Mistborn series…. I have once again to agree with you, the UK are so gorgeous!

  2. says

I LOVE most UK covers of books. I have to thank having The Book Depository to even have the ability to purchase them. The UK covers of Page Morgans books give it an Urban Fantasy feel to them.

I loved that the font matched the books. So beautiful. I don’t know about the new versions if they have the same thing. I think it’s sad they went away from the original look.

  3. says

Good luck with Page Morgan’s books! I read the first 2 books back in December, but didn’t enjoy them. :'( Hope you have better luck! 😀

Also: I would quite possibly KILL for that UK Shiver box set.

Every now and then the UK/international editions get better covers than the US! The new US covers of Throne of Glass came after the UK ones and I’m glad for the change (I only own the UK/INT ones right now but I want to buy the hardcovers too). I also love the UK Mistborn covers. They just fit the series so well. And it’s cool how Gollancz has designed all of the UK covers of Sanderson’s novels in a similar style so they all match. It’s awesome seeing them lined up next to each other in book stores.

  5. says

Oh boy, I hate when UK has awesome covers because I just want them all! How are people supposed to resist? Every so often, the UK gets gorgeous covers I wish the US would sell. If I had the money, I would totally get all the different covers of my favorite books.

The UK covers of the Chaos Trilogy by Patrick Ness is, by far, my favorite UK covers. I wish I could get them. I know they are going to stop selling it soon. Booooo.

(Also, here’s the UK cover of The Wondrous and the Wicked! :D)

  6. says

Oh, book covers and all the issues they present!
    I just want them ALL!!!!

I love all the Shiver covers.

There are some covers where I love the fact that I get the Aussie covers…The Elemental series, by Brigid Kemmerer has somewhat decent covers, but I love the Australian covers so much more. Then a few years later they came out in England, and those covers were just awesome.

    • says

I’ve not read that series yet but I’ve heard great things. I’ll be looking those up! I want all the books. I need a huge library room and lots of $

  7. says

I always prefer our UK covers over the US ones. Well, not always. But MOSTLY. They tend to be a little more . . . artsy? Like abstract and pretty, rather than just model shots and stuff, which US covers tend to favour.

  8. says

I’m from the UK and I will fully admit that we do have exceptionally good covers over here. The nicest dofference I’ve seen lately is My True Love Gave To M3 – it’s far simpler in design and has beautiful pink 3 <3

  9. says

I never really thought to compare them but jeez I might now be obsessed with UK covers too! Seriously so pretty. I love the shiver series covers both the old US covers and the UK. I don’t like what they did for the new US covers either. *scrunches nose*

    • says

Why did they change them? I’ll never understand. The old ones were so beautiful and elegant. Bleh. The obsession is real! If you find more pretty ones let me know!

  10. says

It’s seriously unfair how gorgeous some of the covers the UK puts out are. I hadn’t even seen that Stiefvater set before but holy shit you’re right. lol OHHHH That Mistborn box set!!!!!!! I’ve been wanting to buy it because I need to read that but now I have to get that. Thanks. lol

    • says

Luckily we can get them from Fishpond and Book depository. I need those Shiver books. I need. Yes to Mistborn! Sorry to get you wanting them, haha.

  11. says

Sigh. <3 SO MANY GORGEOUS BOOKS 😀 Yessss. Those editions of Shiver, Linger & Forever are PERFECT 😀 I own the paperbacks, and they are so pretty. Sniffs. You need them 😀 I tend to prefer US covers, probably, but I also LOVE UK covers, which means that for my favorite books I get both, lol 🙂 You should start that too, hih ;p Amazing post Kristen. <3

I am TOTALLY with you. I just started Mistborn (in ebook), and I am REALLY loving it, so I was checking out covers online and the UK ones you feature in the post are definitely the best. Like, not even CLOSE.

But, the ones that have my heart the most are the UK covers of Rainbow Rowell’s various books. I really love the US covers (and some I like MORE than the UK), but I cannot stop myself from buying the UK covers, too! I have at least two different covers for each of her books and there are still more I want!

    • says

I really need to check out the Rainbow books. I’ve only read Eleanor and Park but when I look to read more I’ll be investigating the UK versions.

  13. says

I’d love to know what kinds of discussions go into designing these international covers. When a book is published first in the U.S., and presuming international publishers of that book have the ability to use the U.S. cover, what makes them say, “Let’s redesign this.” Do they just not like the U.S. cover? Or do they think that readers from a particular country won’t like the cover?

And yes, the U.K. versions of Mistborn and Wolves of Mercy Falls are gorgeous!

  14. says

I definitely prefer the original Mercy Falls US covers, because I also loved the color tinted font inside the books! The straight black and white UK ones are pretty but ehh I am happy with the ones I have. I HATE the US redesigns.

I do like those MISTBORN covers but honestly I like the US redesigns that came out recently.

As for the Page Morgan ones I like the US ones and don’t like the UK ones at all…oh and I definitely prefer the Carrie Ryan Cover in the middle which thankfully is the version I have 🙂
