Let’s Take a Moment to Appreciate Erin Fitzsimmons- Cover Designer

I am admittedly shallow and choose books based on their covers. The artwork does so much to steer my expectations and grab my interest when selecting what book to obsess over.

One of my favorite designers is Erin Fitzsimmons. Don’t recognize her name? She’s behind some of your favorite Harper covers and text. I interviewed her a couple of years ago and you can read it here to get more insight into the designer process. Today I wanted to highlight some of my favorite covers she’s created.

Look at all of these incredibly beautiful covers. Coming soon we’ll be seeing her cover for Julie Eshbaugh’s debut Ivory and Bone. I can’t wait to see what she creates since this book is so off the typical YA beaten path (a historical with an icy landscape and I’m hoping for mammoths).

What’s your favorite cover Erin has created?

Eeeek! These are oh so gorgeous. Sigh. Erin is all kinds of talented 🙂 Thank you so much for sharing Kristen. <3 I love them all. But think my favorites are Flamecaster and Snow Like Ashes 😀 Just so pretty. Stunning post, as always. <3

Of all those you put here for our pleasure to see, I prefer Snow Like Ashes and A Madness So Discreet. I haven’t read neither of them, so I don’t know if the books do justice to the covers.

kudos to erin fitzsimmons because these book covers are gorgeous as hell. i know we shouldn’t be judging a book by its cover but its just that we’re very visual people and its what draws us in and i think she’s effective in what she’s doing. my favourite would be snow like ashes. its one of my fave books too. great post!

I seriously love her cover designs. She by only make gorgeous artwork, she imbues the cover with so much going symbolism from the book, she truly gets it! The authors who have had her as a designer are so blessed! I especially like the ones she did for Cruel Beauty and Crimson Bound.

Holy crap, she did all of those? Those happen to be a sampling of some of my FAVORITE COVERS in YA! She’s so incredibly talented! It’s also cool to see how different some of her pieces are! Like, compare Snow Like Ashes to The Rest of Us Just Live Here. I love the versatility.

Thanks for this post! I feel like the cover designers often get forgotten about. It’s pretty cool to learn more about who they are and what they do.

I have such huge admiration for cover designers! They keep doing such gorgeous work. <3 Out of the ones Erin created, I can't pick a single favorite! Not a Drop to Drink, Taken, A Madness So Discreet and Cruel Beauty are my favoriteS though. 😉

I adore her covers!!! I think Cruel Beauty is still my favorite but I love the typography of The House of Ivy and Sorrow, and I LOVE Flamecaster!! It makes me happy that it matches the original series. Can’t wait to see what Ivory & Bone looks like 🙂

I didn’t know it was the same artist who made all these covers! I can now call myself a fan of her work. I do take time to note the authors and publishers of books and try to shed light on those things and people in a team a lot of readers miss but cover artists even slip my mind. So I am going to have to pay more attention to them from now on as well. They deserve to be noticed!

I love that you are highlighting a cover artist, especially since they are very behind the scenes even as many of us obsess over covers. Anyway, Rosamund Hodge’s covers remain some of my favorite ever. I honestly want to frame them and hang them as art hah.
