My Recommendations for 2014 (so far)

It’s hard to fathom that this year is already more than half over. This realization got me thinking about my favorite books of 2014 so far. I wanted to include only the books that are out right now so you can get them at the library or bookstore. I thought I’d list some of these for you in case you’ve missed adding them to your TBR. I’ve written a one line sentence withย an incredibly vague and brief reason/explanation of why I love the book.ย Click on the title to see myย review for each.

The Winner's Curse (The Winner's Trilogy, #1)The Girl with All the GiftsWorld of Trouble (The Last Policeman, #3)

The Falconer (The Falconer, #1)Free to FallThe Kiss of Deception (The Remnant Chronicles #1)
Ruin and Rising (The Grisha, #3)

The Winner’s Curse by Marie Rutkoski
The writing isย superb and I loved the slow burn of the romance in this one.

The Girl With All the Gifts by MR Carey
I won’t say what this one is about but I can say that it fulfilled a hole in fiction I’ve been waiting for.

World of Trouble (The Last Policeman #3) by Ben Winters
This series. Wow, I loved it and that was surprising because I wasn’t sure it would be for me since it’s an adult book and detective story. I am a fan.

Free to Fall by Lauren Miller
This one came unsolicited and I fell in love with the story. Such a great book and I highly recommend it for anyone that likes young adult science fiction.

The Falconer by Elizabeth May
Yes, this book is about the fae but don’t let that stop you from reading it! Also, a lovely slow burn relationship.

The Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson
So much love for this book! Pearson’s writing is wonderful and I loved the characters and relationships.

Ruin and Rising by Leigh Bardugo
If you’ve not read this series yet you must.

Am I missing your favorite of the year so far? Let me know which one in the comments.

I’ve read four of those so far: Ruin & Rising, Free To Fall, The Girl With All The Gifts, and The Winner’s Curse. I should be reading Kiss Of Deception soon.

Are you enjoying The Winner’s Curse? I’ve seen some folks haven’t enjoyed it as much and feel rather meh about it but I adored it (obviously).

  2. says

I totally agree with all of these except for the ones I haven’t read yet! I’d add A Mad Wicked Folly by Sharon Biggs Waller!!

TGwAtG was such an incredible read. I think I love it more a week after reading it actually. It just seeped into my mind and I can’t shake it.

Great list! I really enjoyed Kiss of Deception and Ruin & Rising as well. I’m looking forward to reading The Falconer. I love the book’s size and cover and weight. I can’t wait to dive into it. The Winner’s Curse is probably one of my favorite ones this year as well. I’m just sad I have to wait so long to read the next book in the series!! AH!! Torture!
    Thanks for sharing your list!

I’ve seen a good amount of people that felt that way about R&R–I didn’t reread the first two so I felt pleased. I’m not sure if that would change if I were to read them all at once. I loved the first two a tiny bit more too I think.

  4. says

Ugh I haven’t read most of these, EXCEPT for the Girl with All the Gifts, which i can definitely say was a really good read! Oh, and then I have Dreams of Gods & Monsters on my list. I have yet to read Ruin and Rising though!

I’ve yet to read Dreams of Gods & Monsters! I bought it on release day and it has been sitting gathering dust. I’m scared to read it! Plus, I need more time for reading. I know I’ll love it.

I didn’t like The Winner’s Curse or Ruin and Rising as much as I thought I would, but I did love Free to Fall. I haven’t read the others on your list, but I hear positive things about The Falconer and The Kiss of Deception and I’ve been contemplating on putting them on my TBR list. One of my favorite 2014 reads is Open Road Summer.

I’ve seen a lot of people not love TWC–I think the writing either strikes home or not. I was so surprised by Free to Fall because I’d heard nothing when I read it. I don’t read much contemporary but I have seen good things about Open Road Summer

SOB. So many amazing books. <3 I have read most of them, hih. Sigh. The Winner's Curse. <3 Such a good good good good book. I think I must re-read it again soon. ๐Ÿ™‚ Thank you for sharing sweetie. <3

I’m still shocked that you didn’t enjoy TKoD all that much. we tend to have similar tastes on most books. I’m so eager for you to read TGwAtG!

  7. says

Free to Fall, TGWATG, and TWC would definitely be on my list, too. I started reading The Falconer a couple of months ago and stopped about 30% of the way through. I don’t think I’ve OFFICIALLY DNF’d, but this might give me some incentive to finish.

I think Free to Fall was the biggest surprise for me. (I didn’t know you’d read this, BTW!) I really enjoyed Parallel, Miller’s first book, but Free to Fall was awesome. I can’t wait to read her next book.

Hope you find some more great books during the rest of the year!

    • says

You know, I didn’t love Parallel so I was shocked how much I loved FtF! I didn’t know you’d read it either! I’m so glad we both loved it. You should retry The Falconer. Perhaps you weren’t in the mood?

    • says

I think it works for those that love Rutkoski’s writing style. I also think that with all the hype surrounding the book it might have set expectations higher for some and not lived up to them. I personally adored it and have read it multiple times. If you choose to read it I hope you love it! I’d love to hear what you think good or bad ๐Ÿ™‚

THE GIRL WITH ALL THE GIFTS… man, I WANT this one in my life — badly! I’ll be returning to read your review on it once I’ve completely woken up. lol! I have a copy of THE WINNER’S CURSE, and I really couldn’t tell you what I’ve been waiting for. That’s it. I’m reading it this week, for sure! I’ve heard so many good things about FREE TO FALL. I think a lot of bloggers were pleasantly surprised by it. I should check it out before the year is up!

Thanks for sharing with us, Kris. I LOVED this post! ๐Ÿ™‚

Marlene! You NEED TGwAtG in your life like now. You must, must let me know how you feel about it when you read. Also, I want to hear your thoughts about The Winner’s Curse

  9. says

I have still yet to get to my copy of Free to Fall, though I hear the best things about it. Like, I need to meet this North character…I think that’s his name. ๐Ÿ™‚ Definitely agree with TKOD, TWC, R&R and The Falconer. Sooo good. I’d also add The Unbound, Cruel Beauty, Of Metal and Wishes, Plus One, and Lady Thief. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • says

I haven’t read Of Metal and Wishes yet Jen! I know, I need too. I didn’t request the arc and haven’t gotten to the bookstore yet. It is a must have (need) for me. And yep, North ๐Ÿ™‚
