I am unable to write a traditional review for this book because sometimes…when a book is wonderful I get completely stumped as to what to write. Most of the time I push through and ramble on until I hope I’ve conveyed my love for the book and hope it’s coherent. With ADSOF I have the luxury of not having to write a review so instead I’ll just talk to you about why I think you should read this book.
About the book:
Kell is one of the last Travelers—rare magicians who choose a parallel universe to visit.
Grey London is dirty, boring, lacks magic, ruled by mad King George. Red London is where life and magic are revered, and the Maresh Dynasty presides over a flourishing empire. White London is ruled by whoever has murdered their way to the throne. People fight to control magic, and the magic fights back, draining the city to its very bones. Once there was Black London – but no one speaks of that now.
Officially, Kell is the Red Traveler, personal ambassador and adopted Prince of Red London, carrying the monthly correspondences between royals of each London. Unofficially, Kell smuggles for those willing to pay for even a glimpse of a world they’ll never see. This dangerous hobby sets him up for accidental treason. Fleeing into Grey London, Kell runs afoul of Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations. She robs him, saves him from a dangerous enemy, then forces him to another world for her ‘proper adventure’.
But perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, Kell and Lila will first need to stay alive — trickier than they hoped.
Why Should You Read This Book?
First, have you read any of Schwab’s work yet? If you have- I doubt you’ve not got this on your must read list. If you’ve not read her work you really should if you enjoy creative and complex world building.
If you frequent Twitter you might have seen a whole lot of excitement surrounding this book’s release. I’ve yet to see a single person not like this book so that says something. Of course, it might just be that I’m not friends with poor taste (kidding…sort of).
I’m hoping you’ve read the summary because it’s a really great one. Most times I don’t bother to read them myself but I’d recommend it in this case. I’ll not go over the book’s plot but I will say that I fell in love with Kell and would read pretty much anything he’s a character in. I’ll also say that I really enjoyed the alternate worlds and the fact that Kell had the ability to jump between them. What an amazing concept! Plus, Schwab did not disappoint in her execution.
Also, go into this expecting wonderful baddies that are pretty well frightening and cruel (aren’t those the best?) I really felt they had an amazing back story that we’ve just not seen (yet? please, I’d love to read a novella about them).
Read this if you like magic, adventure, cross dressing pirates, an amazing coat (you’ll need to read the book to see why) and about a 100 more reasons.
