I am very excited to be a stop on the These Broken Stars Tour hosted by The Midnight Garden sharing a fun fact from Meagan Spooner and Amie Kaufman. I adored this book (my review) and it is easily one of my favorites I’ve read this year.
In These Broken Stars both of the main characters have names I found to be very unique: Lilac and Taver. To me, a character’s name becomes incredibly important as a reader journeys alongside them. I am always curious how the author(s) came up with the names they use, especially if I’ve never encountered it before. Meagan and Amie share where and how they came up with Tarver:
A lot of people have asked where Tarver’s name came from. The answer is that we made it up–and then later discovered it’s a real, but rarely used old English name. It means ‘tower’ or ‘tower on a hill’, and we thought that was a pretty great fit!
I couldn’t agree more that Tarver and it’s old English meaning fits his character perfectly.
Now for something incredibly random but fun. Here at My Friends Are Fiction we are obsessed with Legos. Every time we stumble upon a beautiful or unique book cover we immediately start dreaming up what it would look like if the people were Lego mini-figures. The first time I saw These Broken Stars’ cover I knew that we would have do a Lego version.
Be sure to check out the other covers we have done here.
Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner are longtime friends and sometime flatmates who have traveled the world (but not yet the galaxy), covering every continent between them. They are sure outer space is only a matter of time. Meagan, who is also the author of the Skylark trilogy, currently lives in Asheville, NC, while Amie lives in Melbourne, Australia. Although they currently live apart, they are united by their love of space opera, road trips, and second breakfasts.
If you pre-order the book from Malaprop’s Bookstore, you can also get a collectible TBS poster autographed by the authors!
It’s a night like any other on board the Icarus. Then, catastrophe strikes: the massive luxury spaceliner is yanked out of hyperspace and plummets into the nearest planet. Lilac LaRoux and Tarver Merendsen survive. And they seem to be alone.
Lilac is the daughter of the richest man in the universe. Tarver comes from nothing, a young war hero who learned long ago that girls like Lilac are more trouble than they’re worth. But with only each other to rely on, Lilac and Tarver must work together, making a tortuous journey across the eerie, deserted terrain to seek help.
Then, against all odds, Lilac and Tarver find a strange blessing in the tragedy that has thrown them into each other’s arms. Without the hope of a future together in their own world, they begin to wonder—would they be better off staying here forever?
Everything changes when they uncover the truth behind the chilling whispers that haunt their every step. Lilac and Tarver may find a way off this planet. But they won’t be the same people who landed on it.
A timeless love story, THESE BROKEN STARS sets into motion a sweeping science fiction series of companion novels. The Starbound Trilogy: Three worlds. Three love stories. One enemy.
